GSTT is participating with the performance THE THEATRE, written and directed by Pascal Rambert, in the UNITER campaign "Artists for Artists"

20 March 2024

The German State Theatre announces that the performance The Theatre, written and directed by Pascal Rambert, scheduled for March 27 at 7.30pm, is part of the UNITER campaign "Artists for Artists." Moreover, the day of 27 March, on which this production is performed, is not chosen by chance by GSTT, as it is internationally designated as World Theatre Day, the date on which all theatres around the world celebrate the performing arts.

Running this year from 20 March to 20 April, the Artists for Artists campaign, now in its 20th year, raises much-needed funds to help those who, for various reasons, can no longer create the theatrical mystery for a while or forever. So theatres across the country choose to put on a performance of a hit show, and the money from ticket proceeds goes to the Theatre Solidarity Fund. From this fund, theatre people facing complicated medical problems are helped.

The performance with which the German State Theatre participates is written by Pascal Rambert especially for our artistic team. As the author points out, it is a fiction, even if the actors and actresses of the GSTT provided the material for it: memories, experiences, dreams. Mostly these were linked to the profession, because the stage is the centre of life. One bulrush should be pronounced here: theatre, like other artistic pursuits, cannot be done on the side. Seen in this light, everyone shares the experience that there are no boundaries between life on stage and the supposedly private. At the same time, however, this unites them and makes theatre a family affair in a certain sense. All the more so when, as in the case of the GSTT, the middle and younger generations have passed through the hands of the older ones. Looking back on the 70 years of existence of the GSTT, one realises that the history of this German stage in the east of Central Europe, which basically goes back to the 18th century and has had a lot of ups and downs, remains as fragile as it is worth to be protected. Pascal Rambert succeeds in showing the GSTT as a dream ship on which everyone has remained true to the same idea.

"When I listened to the life stories of the 26 actors and actresses, I quickly had the desire to write for all of them. They ranged in age from 20 to 70, and their lives were steeped in Romania's past and recent history. And there was also a reminder of what this German-language theatre represents in the history of this country." Pascal Rambert
