The European Theatre Festival Eurothalia - the seventh edition

19 July 2017

The 7th edition of the European Theatre Festival Eurothalia, organized by the German State Theatre Timisoara (GSTT), will unfold this year under the theme „Limits” and will take place
from the 6th untill the 13th of October 2017.

Within the schedule of the 2017 edition there are performances of some of the most appreciated european theatre and dance companies, like Gob Squad and Markus&Markus from Germany, Les ballets C de la B and Ultima Vez from Belgium, Motus from Italy, Señor Serrano from Spain and the Cultural Center Onassis from Greece. The 2017 edition will also feature a series of events, called Eurothalia Xtension, which are based on the opera of famous director Eugenio Barba and the Odin Teatret Company from Denmark. Moreover, audiences will have the opportunity to view some of the newest and most successful productions of the GSTT.

The Eurothalia Festival is coordinated for the 3rd year running by teatrologist Andreea Andrei who is also the curator of this event, who had this to say about the program of this year’s edition: „This year we chose to talk about limits, transgression in particular: whether it’s about crossing borders or gender fluidity, overcoming your body’s limits or breaking the barriers between audience and actors, about the intertwining of real and virtual, or transcending verbal communication.

This year’s program includes a series of Eurothalia Xtension events, organized together with the Timisoara European Cultural Capital Association 2021. About these events, Chris Torch, the artistic director for the Timisoara 2021 Association, declared: “Timisoara 2021 is committed to empowering existing initiatives in the Timisoara cultural landscape. Eurothalia is one of the finest examples of international exchange in our city. By providing resources to bring Odin Teatret to the festival, with both performances and workshops, we take the opportunity to learn from one of Europe's finest examples of combining high art with community commitment. At the same time we bring for the first time to Timisoara a legendary European theatre company.”

The Eurothalia Festival is supported by Timisoara City Hall and is organised in partnership with the Timisoara European Capital of Culture Association 2021 and the Department for Interethnic Relations within the General Secretariat of the Government, financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Identity and co-financed by the Timis County Council and the Romanian Theater Union, with funding from the theatrical stamp.
