The German State Theatre Timisoara benefits from a new space - the hall at 2 Cuvin Street will be transformed into the Workshop Hall

30 November 2022

On November 29, 2022, in a festive setting, the City Hall of Timisoara, through its representative - Mr. Mayor Dominic Fritz - handed over to the German Theatre the space at 2nd Cuvin Street.

The location, which comprises four industrial halls, is to serve, after renovation and modernisation, the Workshop Hall, a new performance, rehearsal and workshop space of the German Theatre. According to its director, Lucian Vărșăndan, even if the complete renovation will take a number of years, probably three or four, the German Theatre is committed to ensuring that from next year, the year in which Timisoara will be European Cultural Capital, part of the space will already serve the city's cultural infrastructure.

Dominic Fritz opened the event by pointing out the European trajectory of the German Theatre, an important part of the cultural infrastructure of Timișoara: "As you know, we are the only city in Europe that has three theatres in three different languages in the same building, which is an extraordinarily beautiful symbol that we do not want to lose, but at the same time the theatres under the City Council need new spaces, their own spaces, to expand their cultural activity. The German Theatre was and is a landmark theatre in Romania and in Europe and with this space we want to emphasize that we believe in the future of the German Theatre and we believe that the German Theatre has a special role to play on the European theatre scene, especially because it is performed in a language with a large international circulation."

Lucian Vărșăndan, manager of the German Theatre, also pointed out the importance of a new space for artistic and theatrical creation for cultural Timișoara: "In a theatrical sense, the idea and identity of a workshop means the benefit of experimenting, of focusing on artistic creation and moving forward, of creating a cultural asset this time, and we believe that this place is also predestined, in terms of its history, to become a creative workshop. Timisoara is in the process of catching up with a gap in terms of performance infrastructure."

The space will soon undergo renovation and refurbishment, and according to the mayor, funding will come from the local budget as well as from European and cross-border projects.
