The German State Theatre Timisoara participates in the national campaign "ARTISTS FOR ARTISTS"

15 March 2023

The German State Theatre Timisoara is pleased to announce that this year it is again part of the National Campaign "Artists for Artists", 19th edition, UNITER programme, organized TOGETHER with theatres in Bucharest and in the country, from March 15 to April 15, 2023.

Initiated in 2002, the National Campaign "Artists for Artists" is a stimulator of solidarity within the guild, a financial springboard for artists with problems of existence and a signal to the public and the authorities about their situation and their dignity. This event is resuming after a 3-year break due to the SARS-COV2 pandemic and the reality of the war with Ukraine.

Thus, TGST will participate in the campaign with the performance "Cherry Orchard" by A. P. Chekhov, directed by Volker Schmidt, scheduled for 10 April 2023, 19.30, in the main hall of the German Theatre. Proceeds from ticket sales will be directed to the Theatre Solidarity Fund (RO40RZBR0000060007801286 opened at Raiffeisen Bank, Amzei Square Agency) and represent financial support for the beneficiaries of the programme.

"I was born here, my mother lived here, my father, my grandfather... I love this house, I can't imagine life without the cherry orchard, and if it has to be sold, then sell me along with it...", says Liubov Ranevskaya, who returns from a few weeks abroad to her estate. The cherry orchard, whose beauty is praised in the play's first act, is more than that. It is synonymous with home, childhood and carefree youth, while its recurrent blossoming seems to guarantee a new beginning, a constant renewal of life. But in the end, reality catches up with everyone.

The Cherry Orchard is the Russian writer's last great drama, which he wrote before his untimely death and described as a comedy. It is rightly interpreted as a turning point in time: the aristocrats, squandering their fortunes abroad, disappear and enterprising petty bourgeois take their place. But Chekhov wouldn't be the author every director dreams of if he didn't present us with a human comedy. It's a tale of wasted lives, illusions and tangled love stories: Liubov Ranevskaya loves the man who has wrested the last of her money, Varia refuses to be pushed into a marriage with the upstart Lopahin and the eternal student Trofimov loves Ania even though he considers himself superior to love. In the end despair prevails. But the journey continues."
