The National Theatre “Radu Stanca” in Sibiu, on tour in Timisoara

11 December 2017

The performance exchange between the two stages of German expression in Romania continues: after the German State Theatre (GSTT) performed in Sibiu this November, the show “Elektra” based on Euripides and Aeschylus, directed by Bocsárdi László, now it’s the German section of the “Radu Stanca” National Theatre to bring to Timisoara one of its shows. Thus, the performance “Martyr” by Marius von Mayenburg, directed by Radu-Alexandru Nica, will take place
Sunday, the 17th of December 2017, 19:30 o’clock
in the hall of the German State Theatre Timisoara.
The performance features translation into Romanian.

The direction of the show is signed by Radu-Alexandru Nica, while the set design, video concept and light-design are by Mihai Păcurar. Music and sound design are the creation of Vlaicu Golcea. The cast re-unites actors Valentin Späth, Johanna Adam, Daniel Bucher, Daniel Plier, Ali Deac, Renate Müller-Nica, Iustinian Turcu and Anca Cipariu.
The play “Martyr” by Marius von Mayenburg is not only a sharp criticism of the Islamophobia in the West, but also brings to the surface the fundamentalist depths of Western world. Benjamin is 16 years old and refuses to go to swimming classes anymore. When questioned by his mother, he finally mentions that his reasons are of a religious nature. Following this first resistance, he confesses to being a Christian fanatic. This image is upheld by Benjamin through his impassioned quoting of the Bible as well as provocative actions.Class master and biology teacher, Mrs. Roth, thinks it’s a young man’s shout for help. Her well intended attempt to get closer to him are firmly rejected and not long after, Mrs. Roth becomes the target of the boy’s attacks, even more so that the principal and professor of religion are showing understanding towards Benjamin’s fundamentalist thinking.
The project is brought to you by the two theatres with the support of organisations in Banat, respectively Sibiu, of the Democratic Forum of Germans in Romania.
